Expectations

A cloudless sky and crisply ironed darkness

turned my eyes into telescopes.

In a moment of simultaneous eruption,

every star fell out of their seat,

scoring space in golden slashes,

filling in every blank margin.

The freefall, like an upside down volcano,

ended in my lap.

I could’ve walked around in stardust.

Instead, I vacuumed myself off,

and went back to work,

back to looking at the floor

praying to see beautiful things.
