Flyover Winter
Opaque sighs from
smoked-filled lungs
mingle in Winter’s sky
with curses for clouds
only holding a moment
until breaking open
in apathy’s quiet snow,
as white blankets hide
seams of patched roads
and overlapping lives.
Hands hold bent heads
trying to read palms
to understand destiny
and why it skipped over
their cracked leather skin
with dreams of escape,
but sidewalk blurs to sky
and hopes for wings
are distant as Spring.
