Warning Signs
Turn off the oven,
it’s too hot outside.
The beads of sweat
crawl along your stubborn brow
pleading you heed their warning.
But why listen
to the person
who tore open
your bruised but fortified chest
to point you back to your heart.
Don’t you notice?
You still pay the bill
for air conditioning
but it has only gotten warmer
and I’ve shed all my clothes.
